China's missile force nearly doubled in three years, and no budget Tokyo can write will ever match it. Japan has pushed its defense spending past 9 trillion yen, but the real shift is a change in how it pays for defense.

The cost problem

When every incoming missile or drone is met with an interceptor that costs many times more, the defender loses the exchange even when it wins the engagement. Mass is China's biggest advantage, and Japan cannot out-spend it.

Terra A1 and Ukraine's drone war

Instead, Japan is fast-tracking a cheap, attritable interceptor drone that was battle-tested in Ukraine. Terra Drone and Ukraine's battlefield feedback loop are bringing that approach into Japan's own defense trials.

SHIELD and the production gap

The SHIELD program is where the idea meets Japan's defense industry. The open question is production: cheap interceptors only work if they can be built in very large numbers. The video breaks down how Japan is trying to turn China's mass into a liability.
