ROLE
Penetrating bomb for deeply buried, hardened targets.
STRENGTHS
- The world's largest conventional bunker buster (DoD)
- GPS-aided guidance lets several bombs hit the same point
- Combat-proven in June 2025
WEAKNESSES
- Only the B-2 is cleared to carry it
- Very deep sites need several hits
- Needs a full strike package of more than 125 aircraft
The Massive Ordnance Penetrator weighs 30,000 lb and only the B-2 is cleared to carry it. It was used in combat for the first time in June 2025 against Iran's Fordow and Natanz sites, in a strike package of more than 125 aircraft.
Analysts estimate Iran's newest nuclear site sits under 80 to 100 meters or more of rock. Even with this bomb, one strike needs fighters to open the way, jammers, tankers and surveillance aircraft, which is what the paired analysis breaks down.
