ROLE
Stand-off missile carrier that brings volume from outside enemy defenses.
STRENGTHS
- About 70,000 lb of weapons per aircraft
- New F130 engines are expected to cut fuel burn and maintenance
- No stealth needed to launch long-range missiles
WEAKNESSES
- 10 of 13 programs face cost, schedule or performance problems (GAO)
- Radar upgrade breached Nunn-McCurdy limits
- Our analysis: large, visible and vulnerable on the ground
A July 2026 Government Accountability Office report put the total B-52 modernization bill at roughly 21 billion dollars across 13 programs, 10 of them facing cost, schedule or performance problems. The engine program alone is now baselined at 20.2 billion dollars, and the radar upgrade triggered a Nunn-McCurdy breach.
In return the Air Force keeps a fleet of 76 bombers, 74 of them to be upgraded, that each carry about 70,000 lb of weapons. The B-52 does not need stealth to launch long-range missiles from outside enemy defenses, and that is the role the J model is being built for.
